Festival
12:00pm
- 5:00pm
International
House Philadelphia will be transformed for this celebration
of China. Through the Friendship Gate at our entrance, visitors
will find a marketplace featuring food and craft vendors, demonstrations,
information tables for several not-for-profit organizations,
and the Asian
Arts Initiative’s photo exhibit, Chinatown Live(s).
Performances
from the Philadelphia Chinese Opera Society, Yu Wei
Chinese Solo Dance Collection,
Curtis Institute of Music students
Miao Hou on Piano and Quan
Ge on Violin and
Chinese Musical Voices.

Produced
through the Asian Arts Initiative’s Chinatown
Oral
History Project, Chinatown Live(s) spans multiple generations
and many nations of origin. The stories shared challenge the
perceptions of Chinatown as a monolithic ethnic enclave or a
superficial tourist destination, and allude to the complexity
of relationships and perspectives that comprise this growing,
living neighborhood.

The Concrete
Revolution
dir.
Xiaolu
Guo, China/UK, 2004, Beta SP, 62 mins, color, Mandarin w/ English
subtitles
The
Concrete Revolution provides a brave
vision of the dark side of Beijing's transformation to a glossy
modern city. Its blend of objective documentation and personal
reflection adds up to a powerful social commentary. Unfolding
in an innovative visual style, this intelligent exposé of the
social cost of massive modernization has already played to acclaim
at several international film festivals. We are pleased to present
the regional premiere of The Concrete Revolution with the
director to introduce and discuss her film.
Xiaolu
Guo (Lucy Guo) was trained at
the Beijing Film Academy in screenwriting and the London National
Film and TV School in documentary directing, where she now splits
her professional career. Her novel, "Village of Stone," published
in the UK and translated into French and other languages, is
scheduled for release in the U.S. in October 2005 by Random
House.
For
support in arranging Ms. Guo’s visit, we thank Dr. Harold Weaver
and the China Film Project.
