African Art, African Voices

In October, The Philadelphia Museum of Art opens a celebration of African art and culture with an innovative exhibition of more than 150 works of contemporary and traditional art from Africa. We are proud to partner with the PMA in bringing dance troupes, artists and films to University City as part of their city wide African Art, African Voices exhibition.

Tasuma, the Fighter

dir. Daniel Kollo Sanou, Burkina Faso, 2003, 35mm, 90 mins, color, More w/ English subtitles

A comedy set in contemporary Burkina Faso, Tasuma tells the story of a World War II veteran who has been trying for 50 years to obtain his well-deserved military pension. Convinced that he will be paid shortly, Sago buys a mill on credit for his village. Only the money never arrives. When Sago is jailed because he cannot repay the loan, the women of the village rally to set him free. Tasuma is currently enjoying the most successful release of all time in Burkina Faso with 33,000 tickets sold in just three weeks.

Cosmic Africa is the next film in the African Art, African Voices series.
