Germany trombonist Konrad "Conny"
Bauer (b. 1943) started his career in 1969 as guitarist and
singer in Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky's band. But, by the second
half of the 1970s, Bauer became a prominent contributor to
the European free jazz movement. He helped found numerous
groups which influenced the development of jazz in East Germany.
These included FEZ and its successive quartet and trio formations,
the Doppelmoppel Quartet, and Synopsis/Zentralquartett with
Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky, Ulrich Gumpert and Gunter "Baby" Sommer.
From 1988 to 1989 he directed the National Jazz Orchestra
of former East Germany, and later performed with the London
Jazz Composers Orchestra, Joachim Kuhn's Jubilee Band, Globe
Unity Orchestra and NDR Big Band. Since 1983 he has worked
with artists such as Anthony Braxton, Tony Oxley, Derek Bailey,
Evan Parker, Theo Jorgensmann, Peter Brotzmann, Barre Phillips,
Peter Kowald, Han Bennink, Barry Altschul, Alexander von Schlippenbach,
Louis Moholo-Moholo, Gerry Hemingway and George Lewis.
In 2004 Bauer was
awarded the German SWR jazz prize for his solo recordings
Hummelsummen. Noted for his remarkable unaccompanied solo
performances, Bauer uses multiphonics with matchless circular
breathing techniques that conjure his own loops.
For this very rare
performance he is joined by one of the heaviest rhythm sections
in improvised music: William Parker and Hamid Drake. Beginning
with their years together in Peter Brotzmann's Die Like A
Dog ensemble, these two giants are known for their ground-breaking
work with David S Ware, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Bill
Laswell, Fred Anderson, The Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra,
In Order To Survive, Other Dimensions In Music, and much more.
