Throughout its six year history, The Festival of New Trumpet
Music has been dedicated to expanding the repertoire of contemporary
creative brass music, and stretching listener pre-conceptions
about the musical capabilities of the trumpet and the stylistic
boundaries of genre. Open Circuit International Trumpet Ensemble’s
mission is to celebrate and contribute to the diversity of
contemporary music through the medium of the trumpet, and
it has come to be recognized as one of New York City's most
exciting and adventurous events, described by New Yorker
Magazine as “a grand highlight of the musical season.”
In May of 2008,
the French trumpeter Jean-Luc Cappozzo organized a remarkable
event: an international Trumpet Summit, bringing together
six exceptionally innovative trumpet players and a world class
rhythm section for two days of music at one of France's finest
performance halls, Le Petit Faucheux in Tours. Most of these
players had never performed together, and all were delighted
to exchange new techniques and discover new possibilities.
All the while, this musical exploration was brilliantly supported
and inspired by the rhythm section team of bassist Jean-Jacques
Avenel and drummer John Betsch, best know for their decades-long
association with Steve Lacy. Following their performance,
all of the participants vowed to reunite the unique ensemble
and continue the mutually inspiring collaboration.

"I would advise anybody who is in
the vicinity of this group, the Meridian Arts Ensemble, if
you see that they're playing in concert in your town, please
go and see them. They're excellent. It's a brass quintet;
they have wonderful intonation, excellent rhythm, and a good
style to what they play. They play all different kinds of
contemporary music, and they have decided to add some of my
pieces to their repertoire, too. So, if you get a chance to
see them someplace, you should check 'em out. They also have
a CD out [Winning Artists Series] which is very impressive."
