What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

dir. Robert Aldrich, US, 1962, 134 mins, video, b/w

Baby Jane Hudson was a child star, but sister Blanche had the goods to be an adult actress. After a car accident paralyses Blanche, Jane dedicates her life to take care of her invalid sister. Sounds like a warm, family drama, right? Guess again, Baby Jane is mad in every sense of the word and staging a comeback.

All About Eve

dir. Joseph L Mankiewicz, US, 1950, 138 mins, video, b/w

Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) is an ambitious ingenue who wants a career on Broadway and will stop at nothing to get it, including stealing Margo Channing’s man, friends and roles. Only critic Addison DeWitt (George Sanders) sees through Eve’s machinations, saving this knowledge to use later. Davis is delicious and vulnerable as “aging” actress Margo Channing, savoring writer and director Mankiewicz’s every word.
