Presented
in collaboration with Institute of Contemporary Art at the University
of Pennsylvania and their exhibition Carlos
Garaicoa - the first US survey of work by the Cuban
artist.
The
film traces episodes in the lives of three Cuban women, each
named Lucia, each living in three different historical periods:
the Cuban war of independence (with Spain), the 1930's, and
the 1960's. Lucia is arguably one of the best Cuban
films ever made. The psychological portrayal of these three
women, though different in their historical scenarios, is a
remarkable achievement of writing and direction. Raquel Revuelta's
acting, along with the rest of the ensemble, is remarkable in
its verisimilitude. Along with the set design and dazzling cinematography,
one forgets the somewhat less credible third story with its
political slant.
Introduced
by Professor Michael Solomon, Associate Professor of Hispanic
Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and General Editor
of Hispanic Review.
