David Grubbs + Susan Howe and Alan Licht + Aki Onda - Contemporary Voices

Poet Susan Howe and musician David Grubbs most recent collaboration Souls of the Labadie Tracts is based on a long form poem by Howe bearing the same name. The Labadists were a Utopian sect based in Cecil County, Maryland in the late 17th century, who disappeared little more than a generation later. David Grubbs uses electronics and several types of khaen (a Laotian reed instrument) in accompaniment with Howe’s reading of the text.

Aki Onda is an experimental artist working primarily with cassettes tapes - manipulating and recontextualizing them into powerful poetic soundscapes. Guitarist and composer Alan Licht worked with and Loren Conners and Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo to name a few. The long-time duo partners released their first full length recording Everydays (Family Vineyard) earlier this year.
