Planning Future Salons

The mission of the WIS is to connect women from different backgrounds and generations to explore issues of mutual interest from a wide range of experiences in a relaxed atmosphere. As technology becomes the normal mode of interconnectivity the WIS provides the opportunity to come together in person. The September meeting will be devoted welcoming new members and planning for the year.

What would YOU like to make of the Salon for 2007/2008?

Women, Money and Power

How do we as women equate money and power? Do women use the power of money in the same way as men? Do we seek money for the same reasons as men? When we acquire money how does it impact our lives? Does money define our self-worth as women? Do women from different cultures and traditions deal with these issues in different ways?

Monday, March 12

How do these complex relationships differ by culture? Will the 21st Century alter these time proven struggles and bonds? Join women from various backgrounds and traditions to explore these historic and relevant relationships and perhaps help to find a context and new point of view for your own relationships.

Are the choices different today for women just starting out? Are the choices different in different parts of the world? Join women at different points in their life as we explore where our choices have taken us and what future roads are waiting.

Winter Holiday Celebrations

December 21 is the shortest day of the year and everyone feels the lack of sunlight.  For centuries people have been lighting candles and building fires to fend off the darkness of winter. Christians celebrate the birth of the Christ child, Jews light the menorah to commemorate the rededication of the Jerusalem temple; African Americans celebrate Kwanzaa by lighting the 7 candles of the kinara.

Traditions are a cornerstone to culture and so appreciating others traditions is one of the most important keys to understanding their culture.  The gathering will be an opportunity to share your traditions and learn about those of others.  Participants are encouraged to bring music tapes, holiday trinkets or other symbols of their celebrations.

October 9

Women and Politics

Liberia, Chile, Ireland and Germany, to name just a few, have all elected women to head their governments. Yet the US, home to the women’s liberation movement,

has not even nominated a woman to be President. What lessons can Americans take from these women and the people who elected them?

November 13

Women and Honoring the Dead

November 1st in Latin culture, the celebration is called the Day of the Dead; in other cultures, the Feast of All Saints. However we term it, women have a central role in keeping memories of our ancestors alive. Exploring the rituals of death and the role women play in different cultures will be the central focus of our November Salon.

For those interested El Lado Oscuro del Corazon (The Dark Side of the Heart)

is a highly metaphorical exploration of the subject and is available from Netflix.

Ruin’s Wheel by G. Jan Colijn

A father’s World War II memoirs, discovered by his son decades after the war, combine with the son’s reflections – covering years of teaching and research on war, and on the destruction of Europe’s Jews. The combination creates powerful insights about a global problem that does not seem to go away: genocide.

G. Jan Colijn, originally from Naarden, The Netherlands, lived at nternational House from 1970-75 while attending Temple University. He was an IHouse Trustee from 1990-2002 and currently serves on IHouse Alumni Council.

Jan is Dean of General Studies and Professor of Political Science at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey and is co-editor of several books and author of many articles on the Holocaust and genocide. His work with the College’s Holocaust Resource Center and his statewide and international activities has been recognized with several honors, including the Honey & Maurice Axelrod Award.

With IHouse Alumni Get-Together at 6pm.
