Fania All-Stars in Afrika

prod. Jerry Masucci, US, 1974, video, 83 mims, color, English and Spanish

w/ English subtitles

A key 70s moment of pride for the New York Latin scene and one of a number of crucial live sets cut by the legendary Fania All-Stars! The group were invited to play a three day music festival in Zaire in 1974 - timed to coincide with the Rumble In The Jungle Ali/Foreman fight. After blowing the crowd away on the first night of the festival, they took the stage again for a massive encore on the last night recorded here in all its glory! The energy of the set is amazing as some of New York's greatest Latin artists of the time rock the house in front of a crowd of 80,000 Africans creating a cultural exchange that should have made the State Department blush.

Special guests include PUPI LEGARRETA, native son to Cuba, violinista, flautista, cantante, arreglista, pianista, y guitarrista, and THE ONLY Philadelphia-based member of the Fania All-Stars. Don’t miss this rare appearance!

And fresh off the plane from Loiza, Puerto Rico (where they attended a tribute to their family for preserving the art and legacy of Bomba): LA FAMILIA ROJAS, one of the Philly’s renowned Bomba dance companies.

To keep us moving and dancing under the open night sky, a rare *vinyl set* from DJ RAHSAAN playing hits and rarities from the Fania label.

FREE popcorn courtesy of Whole Foods! Family-friendly environment!
