Phantom of the Opera    Philadelphia Premiere

dir. Rupert Julian, USA, 1925/1929, 35mm, 88 mins, b/w and color, silent w/ English intertitles

with live musical accompaniment by ALLOY ORCHESTRA

Co-presented by Cinema Studies, Department of Music and Penn Humanities Forum at the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Film Society

Just in time for Halloween, one of the greatest horror films of all time - the original Phantom of the Opera - is back and better than ever! This newly restored print recreates the elaborate colorization of the 1929 release, with hand-colored scenes, intricate tinting and experimental Technicolor sequences. Lon Chaney’s rendition of the ghoulish Phantom is so terrifying, you’ll wonder why anyone ever tried to remake this classic. Alloy Orchestra’s creepy new score adds just the right note to make this masterpiece come alive.
