I Am a Man: Black Masculinity in America
dir. Byron Hurt, USA, 2002, 60 mins, video, color

I Am a Man is Byron Hurt’s examination of the effects of racism and sexism in American culture. This powerful documentary asks the questions: What is Black masculinity? How have racial stereotypes in this country shaped Black masculinity? How does sexism affect Black women and men? How do gay Black men define their own masculinity? And how do Black men attain a sense of manhood? Hurt will also screen excerpts from Beyond Beats and Rhymes, his new work examining the hip-hop economy.
