Marcus Samuelsson
is the chef and co-owner of Aquavit, a restaurant
offering innovative interpretations of classic Scandinavian
cuisine that marries the traditional with the contemporary.
He is also the Culinary Director of Riingo, the American-Japanese
fusion restaurant that opened in 2004.
At the age of 38, Marcus has received
more accolades than many chefs receive in a lifetime. A graduate
of the Culinary Institute in Gothenburg, Marcus apprenticed
in Switzerland, Austria, France and the US In 1995 he was
hired as Aquavit’s Executive Chef. Just 3 months later,
Aquavit received a three star review from The New York Times.
Marcus was honored with the James Beard Foundation Award for
“Rising Star Chef” in 1999 and “Best Chef,
New York” in 2003. He was also celebrated as one of
“The Great Chefs of America”
Marcus is also an
ambassador for the US Fund for UNICEF and serves on the Board
of Directors of Careers Through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP).

Annual Chinese New Year Celebration
Join us for our
annual celebration of the Lunar New Year as we bring in the
Year of the Ox.
Chinese New Year
starts with the new moon on the first day of the new year
and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The celebration was
traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given
in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and
the family ancestors. The spirits of the ancestors, together
with the living, celebrate the onset of the New Year as one
great community. The communal feast called "surrounding the
stove" or weilu. It symbolizes family unity and honors the
past and present generations.

founded Traveling Mercies, a non-profit foundation that is
dedicated to helping others, while creating a vehicle to remove
barriers between cultures so that individuals can share their
strengths, assets and blessings with each other. Aldo has
traveled to, and worked, with communities in Italy, Jamaica,
Haiti, Mexico, South America, Bhutan, Nepal, Afghanistan,
Kenya, Ethiopia and others. His affiliation with volunteer
groups include local churches, The Salvation Army, The Women
of Hope, and The Nyumbani Children’s Home, to name a few.

Raphiatou
Noumbissi is a Bilingual HIV Case Manager working with
Action AIDS. Her case load consists of 40% immigrant
families. Prior to this job she worked for 5 years
in Belgium as a social worker with physically and sexually
abused women from North Africa. Raphiatou was born and
raised in Cameroon located at the intersection of West and
Central Africa; she earned a Bachelor's degree in Social
Work and Family & Sexuality in Belgium before moving to
Philadelphia in 1999. Four years ago she started a medical
outreach in Foumban Cameroon where each year she leads a team
of 6 people including pediatric and adult nurse practitioners,
dentist and social workers to provide free medical consultation
and education for 4 weeks. The next trip is being plan for
May 09.

Ambassador Ibrahim Gambari, Under-Secretary General for Political
Affairs of the United Nations. With opening remarks by Mr
Eric-Vincent Guichard, Chief Investment
Officer for Gravitas Capital, on the effects of the current
economic crisis on the African continent.
About
Ibrahim Agboola Gambari
Prior
to this appointment to U nder-Secretary-General for Political
Affairs, Mr Gambari held the position of Under-Secretary-General
and Special Adviser on Africa at the United Nations. In that
capacity, his functions included promoting UN and international
support for African development, in general, and the New Partnership
for African Development (NEPAD). Mr Gambari served as Special
Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United
Nations Mission to Angola, from September 2002 to February
2003.
Before
joining the UN Secretariat in 1999, Mr Gambari served as the
Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations.
He was also a senior member of the Nigerian delegation to
10 sessions of the General Assembly). Mr Gambari served as
President of the Security Council on two occasions when Nigeria
was a member of the Security Council. He also chaired the
UN Special Committee against Apartheid, which successfully
saw the demise of apartheid and the establishment of democratic
rule in South Africa. Prior to his tenure as Ambassador/Permanent
Representative, Mr Gambari served as Minister of External
Affairs of Nigeria. He had served as Director-General, Nigerian
Institute of International Affairs.
Born
in Nigeria in 1944, Mr Gambari attended Kings College, Lagos,
as well as the London School of Economics, where he obtained
a bachelor's degree in political science with a specialty
in international relations. He received his MA in 1970 and
his PhD in 1974 in Political Science/International Relations
from Columbia University in New York.
From
1969 through 1983, Mr Gambari held a variety of teaching posts,
beginning at the City University of New York, then at the
State University of New York in Albany, and later at Ahmadu
Bello University in Zaria, Nigeria. He was Chairman of the
Department of Political Science at the University in Zaria
where he founded the first undergraduate Programme in International
Studies in Nigeria. He was a Visiting Professor at Johns Hopkins
School of Advanced International Studies, Georgetown University
and Howard University (1986-1989).
Mr Gambari
was also a Research Fellow at the Brookings Institution, Washington,
DC, and a Resident Scholar with the Rockefeller Foundation
Center in Italy. He has also authored several books and scholarly
articles on international relations and oreign policy.
In
recognition of a distinguished career as a scholar-diplomat,
the University ofBridgeport (USA) awarded Mr Gambari the Doctor
of Humane Letters degree (honoris causa - 2002); the prestigious
Johns Hopkins University elected him to membership of the
University's Society of Scholars (2002); and the Government
of Nigeria awarded him the national honour, Commander of the
Federal Republic (CFR).
