The
Climate Project with Lance Simmens
We
truly can and must think globally and act locally. The future
is now.
The
scientific evidence on global warming is as disturbing as
it is definitive. Increasing carbon emissions is a challenge
to our planet and all who inhabit it. This is not a challenge
that awaits us in the future, it is here now, and we must
both acknowledge it and address it.
The
Climate Project is based on the award-winning documentary
film An Inconvenient Truth. Roughly an hour long,
the presentation of the scientific evidence is intended to
appeal not to scientists but to average citizens. It is also
constantly being updated to reflect current events and facts.
It is a call to action. It is intended to awaken the conscience
and prompt individuals to take action both individually and
collectively.
The
goal of The Climate Project is to provide the ammunition necessary
to arm citizens with the facts needed to insist that corrective
actions are taken immediately. It is not a message of desperation
and despair, but rather one of hope. Just as we have tackled
seemingly intractable issues in the past, i.e. slavery, depression,
world wars, racial injustice, we too are capable of mobilizing
our efforts to confront and conquer an issue that threatens
to radically change the environment of our planet.
Lance
Simmens has held senior public policy positions stretching
back to the Carter Administration. For over 30 years he has
served in a variety of positions at the Federal, State and
local levels of government. His service includes six years
on the US Senate Budget Committee, six years with the US Conference
of Mayors, eight years in the Clinton Administration, and
is currently Special Assistant to Pennsylvania Governor Ed
Rendell.
He
was instrumental in establishing the first Office of Sustainable
Development in the Federal government. Its mission was to
balance the dual principles of economic development and environmental
stewardship in the search for a comprehensive solution to
natural resource disasters. in 1995, Lance Simmens was awarded
the Department of Commerce’ Gold Medal Award, its highest
honorary award, for his work in this area.
