International Puppet Film Shorts

Spiral Q Puppet Theater's Handmade Films and International House presents International Puppet Film Shorts. This unique screening will offer some of the most surreal, beautiful, comedic, strange, and dark imagery ever produced in puppet film. The shorts will highlight various forms of pupperty including stop motion animation, claymation, traditional puppetry, and much, much more.

This screening is part of the Handmade Films series, now in its second year, which has presented the works of local, national, and international puppet filmmakers. Past events have featured the works of Jim Henson, Miss Pussycat, Jan Swankmajer, Brothers Quay, Jessie Rosensweet, Xander Marro, and many more.

The Epic of Gilgamesh

dir. Quay Brothers, UK, 1985, 16mm, 11 mins, color

Enter the world of the Quay Brothers where dreams and the subconscious unfold in a hypnotic ballet mechanique. The two characters in this film fly, fight and frolic in a seemingly ordinary landscape, but look closer, this landscape is far from ordinary.

Vincent

dir. Tim Burton, USA, 1982, 16mm, 6 mins, b/w

A disturbing tale of madness and of a young boy’s search for meaning, Vincent is one of Tim Burton’s first forays into filmmaking. One can see how he has continued to explore themes from Vincent in his later works including, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Beetlejuice.

The Hand

dir. Jiri Trnka , Czechoslovakia , 1965, 16mm, 18mins, color

This simple fable is a scathing indictment of Totalitarianism, and is Trnka’s final animated film. Its message is universal and timeless.

The Mascot

dir. Wladyslaw Starewicz, France, 1934, 26mins, b/w, silent with Englsih intertitles

A harrowing tale involving a stuffed toy dog and the little boy who owns him, this short film is an animated masterpiece and a perfect example of why Starewicz is considered a pioneer in the field of animated films.

There will be additional short films provided by Spiral Q and screened during this event.
