Reelblack presents

She’s Gotta Have It

dir. Spike Lee, USA, 1986, 35mm, 84 mins, b/w with color interlude

Philadelphia’s most popular screening series devoted to African-American film kicks off it’s fourth season with a Special 20th Anniversary screening of She’s Gotta Have It.  Spike Lee’s hilarious and sexy debut, filmed in 12 days on an initial budget of $22,000, went on to earn over $7 million and launch the career of one of America’s most exciting directors.

Lee stars as Mars Blackmon, one of three suitors vying for the attention of beautiful Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns), who is taking her time making up her mind about her sometimes belligerent lovers.  Frankly and unapologetically sexy, She’s Gotta Have It served as the spark that ignited our current wave of Black Filmmaking.

Co-starring John Canada Terrell, Tommy Hicks, Raye Dowell and Joie Lee. To commemorate this special milestone, Reelblack will hold a post-film discussion with members of the She’s Gotta Have It cast, including John Canada Terrell (Greer Childs) to commemorate this milestone.
