The Movement: The Story of Philadelphia’s Settlement Houses

USA, 2007, video, 20 mins, color

Come early to mix and mingle at the prescreening reception at 6pm

The roots of the Settlement Movement began in Chicago with Jane Addams and came to Philadelphia

in the late 1800’s, a time which bristled with the same issues that modern cities face today – fabulous wealth next to crushing poverty, crime, the lack of social services, powerful institutions, ignorance, gentrification, politics, good intentions, and the ever-present need for good education.

As it was a century ago, a large part of the constituency of today's settlement houses in Philadelphia – the Wharton Settlement, the Houston Center, Settlement Music School, Germantown Settlement, Lutheran Settlement and the Lighthouse – consist of young people. This was a natural point of entry for these 12 young filmmakers. They worked collectively to conceive, research, write, shoot and edit this documentary which looks at the history of these institutions that provided food, warmth in the winter, education, culture, and political clout – a voice for thousands and thousands of the city's poor and disenfranchised residents.
