Cinema Tropical

Cinema Tropical is the definitive source for Latin American film in the United States. It is a comprehensive and collaborative project between institutions, organizations and individuals that work in the promotion of Latin American cinema. The Cinema Tropical Series showcases a recent Latin American film each month. In the past few years, several Latin American countries have seen their filmmaking industries show signs of recovery and growth, as new ground in both the commercial and independent fronts is broken. This series brings a selection of films from both tendencies, giving Philadelphia audiences a glimpse into the exciting revitalized cinema from Latin America.

La Cienaga (The Swamp)

dir. Lucrecia Martel, Argentina, 2001, 35mm, 102 mins, color, Spanish

w/ English subtitles

In her highly accomplished debut film, Argentine director Lucrecia Martel skewers the decadence of the bourgeoisie with an effectiveness rarely seen since Buñuel. As an unbearably hot and sticky summer winds on, a wealthy family and their lower-class relatives come together in an over-the-hill resort town to try to make the most of a bad situation. Balancing precariously between black humor and palpable foreboding, La Cienaga has been heralded as a masterpiece of the New Argentine Cinema.
